When Green Day announced that they’d be releasing a new album, Father of All Motherfuckers, to go along with their upcoming Hella Mega Tour with Weezer and Fallout Boy, candidly speaking, I had mixed feelings going into this album. It was impossible to expect the same thing with a band like Green Day, which has been active for over thirty years. But, it’s also important to have an open mind, so that even if I didn’t like it, I could still realize it’s value.

"Texas Sun" by Khruangbin and Leon Bridges

The unexpected collaboration between Khruangbin and Leon Bridges on the four song EP “Texas Sun” harmoniously unites the two artists around their shared concept of home. While their unison under Columbia Records came as a surprise to me, their respective musical influences have accompanied me through the last five years of my life. To this day, I still can’t hear Bridges’ feature on “Across The Room” or Khruangbin’s “White Gloves” without reminiscing. Understandably, the idea of putting Bridges in harmony with the independent instrumentals of Khruangbin in this EP while exciting, felt foreboding.

While on a road trip at the beginning of January with two of my closest friends, I listened to FKA Twigs’ MAGDALENE front to back for the first time. Holding my best friend’s hand in the passenger’s seat the entire time, this album effectively broke my heart over and over again. Pouring out everything she had into this piece of art, FKA Twigs reflects upon the ruin and destruction of a relationship and her experience with divorce. It’s clear that MAGDALENE was made to help her cope with the destruction of her marriage.
